Transportation Systems

Security and logistics optimisation are key factors today for modern railways together with speed, reliability and convenience. Heavy investments in the European rail infrastructure are expected over the next decade to obtain a more attractive and fully modernized public transportation infrastructure – and a more economic operation. As well as for the long distance transportation and the short distances optimum line usage is the key.

Logica Transportation Systems is developing advanced solutions for interlocking control and traffic management systems with the PROCOS platform as the MMI console. Furthermore the PROCOS platform is used for test and simulation console. PROCOS Train Control Systems (TCS) is a concept for manually and automatically train control systems and wayside equipment. The base for this system is the understanding of the train control and interlocking. The utilization of industry standard field-proven certified safety PLC technologies form a solid platform for the railway control applications. TCS introduces the usage of modular industry standard safety technologies and modern object oriented system design approach to revamp existing railroad systems and marshalling yards. The TCS system can be delivered with a interlocking interface or with interlocking. The TCS system together with the interlocking is capable of interfacing several types of existing point machines, signals, train detection and ATP (automatic train protection) equipment.

The Transportation Systems departments are working with:

  • PROCOS RAILScada Integrated Control Centre system
  • Distributed Interlocking System
  • Centralised Traffic Control
  • Control and Display System
  • Automatic Train Protection (ATP)
  • Train describers
  • Train paths, blocking
  • Signal control and monitoring
  • Points and lock control and monitoring
  • Integrated axle counting
  • Interfaces Remote controlled devices
  • Rail vacancy monitoring
  • Interlocking systems
  • Control and monitoring

Tunnels are considered to be highly complex route sections that pose extraordinary safety requirements. By combining guidance and control systems with modern operating technology, PROCOS offers ideal tunnel control systems that take all eventualities into account. Tunnels are particularly critical sections on major roads and freeways. Incidents that are comparatively harmless on open routes can cause disastrous consequences in tunnels.

Preventing accidents and congestions

The rescue of accident victims or removal of breakdowns in tunnels is extremely difficult. Therefore, accidents and congestions must be prevented by all means. Incidents like breakdowns, fire or exceeding carbon monoxide limits must be detected as soon as possible and eliminated.

Comprehensive units for traffic management and traffic control:
- traffic signalling systems - variable traffic signs - height control systems - detectors - video systems - history data logging systems All of those components meet highest safety requirements.

Specific Incidents and Emergency Situations

Traffic control is either affected automatically or manually, and automatic scenarios have been defined to cover various incidents. If, for example, a fire alarm device is activated, the traffic lights at the tunnel entrance automatically switch to red, and the tunnel is blocked. Manual intervention in the traffic is primarily initiated during maintenance works if part of the circulation area in a tunnel is not available for a certain period of time.

Comprehensive Prevention

To be prepared for any kind of interruption, PROCOS tunnel control systems are not limited to guidance and control units. The systems are closely linked to the operational technology of tunnels like light, air and energy supply, fire detection systems, pollution measurements or emergency systems.
